Private Duty Nursing Service
Nursing care for hospital patients is provided exclusively by the hospital’s own nursing staff. In cases where patients are unable to care for themselves due to their condition, additional support may be provided by private duty nurses. Private duty nurses bear full and sole responsibility for the services they provide to hospital patients and are included within the provisions of the current operating regulations.
Private duty nurses have no employment relationship with the hospital, and the cost of their services is borne by the patient or the patient’s insurance fund, where such coverage is provided.
The private duty nursing service concerns the provision of home-based care for patients who require special attention and support, particularly those in severe general condition. This service may be reimbursed partially or fully by EOPYY, depending on the severity of the patient’s condition, disability percentage, and the criteria set by the insurance fund.
The reimbursement for the use of a private duty nurse in public hospitals, for patients in severe general condition who require special care, is provided only during night hours. The compensation is set at €30 per night on weekdays and €45 per night on weekends and public holidays.
- Public hospital: The hospitalization must take place in a public hospital.
- Severe patient condition: There must be documented evidence from the clinic indicating that the patient is in severe general condition.
- Disability of 80% or higher: For patients with a disability rating above 80%, the total number of nights may be covered.
- Number of nights: Reimbursement relates to a specific number of nights (e.g., 8 or up to 12 nights), depending on the EOPYY circular and supporting documentation.
- Application: An application is submitted to EOPYY, accompanied by the required documentation proving the patient’s severe condition.
- Approvals: The reimbursement period may be extended if the need is confirmed by the Director of the clinical department.
